The Mentalist - Red Handed
On The Mentalist, the operations manager at a resort casino was murdered. Patrick Jane tries his hand at solving the case while teaching the non-mentalist card players at the table.
Jane played black jack at the casino, winning a large amount of money. When the pit boss shut his game down, Jane let him know the young female dealer was cheating with an accomplice. The dealer was fired.
He later found out the dealer was cheating to raise money for her mother who was in the hospital with a life-threatening disease.
With his earnings, Jane bought each of the female members of the team a beautiful necklace and earring set, and as the men gazed at the gifts with a hungry-puppy look on their face, Jane tossed each of them a small box. Inside was a high-end watch they all declared ugly, but the guys each rushed to put the watch on their wrist.
The team met at a restaurant for lunch and Jane taught them few of his card playing memory tricks. The women gave him back the jewelry and walked away, but the men both looked at him and said, “Nope, we are keeping our watches.” Jane laughed.
Jane then wrapped up the rest of the money and the jewelry, and tossed the package into a nonprofit’s drop-box.
As suspicion focused on the dead man’s son-in-law, Patrick arranged to join a high-stakes game with the suspect. Of course, Patrick won the game in a showdown with the suspect. At the end of the game, the suspect revealed the evidence needed to arrest him for murder.
The last scene showed the original card dealer at her mother’s bedside. A hospital employee brought her a metal case, and told her a good looking blond man dropped it off for her. When she opened the case, it was full of money. She burst into tears.
There is a reason The Mentalist is the top new show of the season. Simon Baker is perfect as the independent consultant who does not play by the rules. The cast works well together and the show deftly mixes humor with the harsh reality of crime. Baker plays the role with an innocence that belies the depth of his intelligence, while the viewer enjoys knowing his secret.
If you have not yet watched the mentalist at work, be sure to catch the next episode on Tuesday night at 9:00 pm ET/PT.
